Signs of Trouble

No or slow water flow is a sign of well trouble. Recognize pulsing water pressure as a symptom of potential issues. Be aware of a constantly running well pump indicating trouble.

Common Problems

Understand that a tripping breaker may signal a problem with the well pump. Note that a faulty pressure switch can lead to pump issues. Learn that a waterlogged pressure tank can cause pump malfunctions.

Lifespan of Pumps

Acknowledge that regular maintenance can extend a pump’s lifespan. Understand that pump lifespan varies based on usage and maintenance. Consider the average lifespan of a well pump before replacement.

Troubleshooting Steps in Nanjemoy and All Southern Maryland Cities

Check Power Supply

  • Ensure the well switch near the pressure tank is turned on.
  • Verify the well’s double-pole circuit breaker is not tripped.
  • Reset the breaker if necessary to restore power to the pump.

  • Test the pressure switch by jarring the electrical contacts.
  • Replace a faulty pressure switch by unscrewing and reconnecting wires.
  • Understand the role of the pressure switch in activating the pump.

Assess Pump Controller

  • Remove and replace the pump control cover if necessary.
  • Understand the function of the pump controller in starting the pump.
  • Consider replacing the pump controller as a last resort before professional help.

Verify Pressure Tank Status

  • Depress the air valve on the tank to check for water.
  • Look for water pulsing at the fixture as an indicator of tank status.
  • Ensure the pressure tank is not waterlogged for optimal pump performance.

Repair and Maintenance

Quick Fixes

Fold off damaged areas on the pressure switch contacts to address immediate issues. If the pump starts after banging on the tube under the pressure switch, consider it a temporary solution. After applying a quick fix, replace the pressure switch promptly.

Routine Upkeep

Regularly check the pressure tank’s air valve to ensure optimal functionality as preventive measures. Routine maintenance and annual inspections can avoid common pump problems. Establishing a maintenance schedule is crucial to extending the pump’s lifespan.

Replacement Guide

Identifying Aging Pumps

Inspect aging pumps for wear and tear, such as rust or corrosion on the exterior. Also, check for unusual noises during operation.

Monitor pump performance by observing water pressure fluctuations or decreased water flow, indicating potential aging issues.

When aging pumps exhibit signs of decline, explore replacement options to ensure a consistent water supply and prevent breakdowns.

Replacement Indicators

Replace a pump that runs continually without delivering water, which could indicate internal damage or wear.

If standard troubleshooting steps fail to resolve pump issues, consider replacement to avoid further complications and expenses.

Upgrade to a new pump if the current one displays irreparable damage like motor failure or severe leaks.

Choosing a New Pump

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I identify issues with my well pump based on its sounds?

If your water well pump is making unusual noises, such as screeching or grinding, it could indicate motor issues or worn-out bearings. Listen closely to pinpoint the source of the sound and consult a professional for further diagnosis and repair.

How do I troubleshoot a malfunctioning well pump?

Start by checking the power supply, pressure tank, and pressure switch. Ensure the circuit breaker is not tripped and inspect for any leaks in the system. If these basic checks don’t solve the issue, consider calling a professional for a thorough inspection.

What are some common repair and maintenance tasks for well pumps?

Regular maintenance tasks include checking for leaks, testing the pressure switch, inspecting the wiring connections, and lubricating moving parts. Repairs may involve replacing worn-out components like seals, impellers, or motors. It’s crucial to follow manufacturer guidelines and seek professional help when needed.

When is it time to consider replacing a well pump instead of repairing it?

If your well pump is old, constantly failing, or requires frequent repairs, replacing it might be more cost-effective. Factors such as decreased water pressure, high energy bills, or contamination issues also signal the need for a new pump.

What preventative measures can I take to prolong the lifespan of my well pump?

Schedule professional inspections regularly, monitor water quality, avoid overworking the pump, maintain proper water levels in the well, and protect the system from extreme weather conditions. Implementing these preventive measures can help extend the longevity and efficiency of your well pump.

We had a well pump start to die on us after the Thanksgiving holiday, leaving my family with intermittent water to the house over the weekend. I called Grove & Son on Sunday, and they were at the house promptly on Monday afternoon. Communication about scheduling was excellent. The crew arrived and set immediately to work. They found issues with the original installation of the well, and provided clear options and prices to resolve the problems with the well's downpipe. A few hours later, the house had better water pressure than it has had in years. I was also impressed that they are using high-quality well pumps that are designed, assembled, and tested in the USA. I expect to not have to worry about my well pump for years to come.

Incredible Service on a Freezing Cold Day! I cannot say enough good things about these guys. On one of the coldest, most bitter days, my plumbing stopped working entirely. I’m located in Colonial Beach, Virginia, and these heroes came all the way from Mechanicsville, Maryland, to help me out. Within just two hours, they were at my door—on a freezing day, no less! Turns out, the check valve or expansion valve on my well plumbing had busted. To give you an idea of what they were up against, this setup was from the 60s or 70s—a total mess. They didn’t hesitate for a second. They jumped into a hole filled with freezing water, drained it, diagnosed the problem, and replaced everything down there. Three guys spent two hours in bitter cold, working in water, and what I got was a top-of-the-line, brand-new installation. The best part? They charged me only $680 out the door. This included several hundred dollars of new equipment, including a pressure regulator, gauge, and emergency valve. Honestly, I was blown away. Their work ethic, professionalism, and pricing were phenomenal. If you’re dealing with plumbing issues, especially anything involving a well pump, I can’t recommend these guys enough. They’re efficient, skilled, and truly go above and beyond—even in the worst conditions. I’m incredibly happy with their service!

Want to thank these guys so much. We have a small farm and found ourselves without water and they were able to swing by and check it out within a couple hours. Seems we had unknowingly turned off our emergency switch for the well. They quickly found the problem and didn't charge us anything for the inconvenience. Couldn't recommend more.
